CS50 project spam?
« on: December 09, 2016, 07:10:06 pm »
Ok, I know we normally frown upon 'advertising' non gmod/game related sites, but, I'd really like to post about Sheri's final project for her Harvard CS50 course.

Here's what I'd like to post to Off Topic.
Any big objections?
(There will eventually be a ~1 minute video link too, but it currently includes her real name, and we're not willing to share that with the world yet - once graded a new video will be made)

---------------------------------
My wife recently took Harvard's CS50 (Introduction to Computer Science) course.
Her final project was to make an application or program that is...
Quote
something of interest to you, that you solve an actual problem, that you impact your community, or that you change the world. Strive to create something that outlives this course.
(Quoted straight from
Harvard's CS50 2016 final project overview at http://cdn.cs50.net/2016/x/project/project.html )

Are you a creative person who wants to sell stuff you make? Know that type of person?
Ever been challenged with not knowing what to sell something for?
About to buy something homemade and unsure if you're paying too much?
Thanks to her idea made for the final project, those situations can now be less difficult!

Introducing… Creatives Pricing

https://cp.catslitteringthehall.com

Creatives Pricing is a web site that can be used to return both the median and the average price from a list of up to a 100 of the most recently added item you searched for as pulled from the Etsy.com web site.
It allows you to do a US search, or a search in a single state.

(What is Etsy? It's an online store community for homemade goods and services for the creative person - See https://www.etsy.com/about )

Generic Tech Specs:
Platforms: HTML, Javascript, CSS, PHP5
API: Etsy.com (https://www.etsy.com/developers/documentation)
Project Grade: (Yet unknown, due date was 12/8/16 Noon Eastern - She submitted it at about 10am EST)

So, a silent veto then?
Fine. *sigh*

Sheri just saw scores today, out of 5 points possible for each category;
Scope: 5
Correctness: 5
Design: 4
Style: 4
With the way her harvard cs50 course grades, she guesses this is like a 95-98% out of 100.
This final project is 20% of her grade.

She's pretty happy, at least about this portion.

No objection from me, if it's still relevant.

It's still relevant, but I might as well wait a few days to post.
She's now working on her actual 'real' web languages and styling/design class final project that will soon be up at the root domain.
I saw a sneak peak of the general layout and, Sheri just amazes me with her artistic design.
(Even if she's having trouble with the fine functionality details...I see a long night for her ahead, an art project is never done (project due noon tomorrow).
I'm kinda happy too. She's letting me optimize her CP site's PHP now that it's been graded.
I've not code geeked like this past two nights in a while.
I've missed it.

Sorry -- I've been lurking as a guest, but this is the first time I've actually logged on in a while. I have no problem with such an advertisement.

Glad she got a high score! :)

And Merry Christmas, all! And Happy New Year soon. :D
