About the server
« on: December 28, 2007, 12:55:31 am »
What would you guys think of moving our dedicated server over to windows? As much as it would pain me to move away from linux, our web traffic shouldn't be high enough to be affected by windows... shortcomings, but our gmod server would get a nice boost.

I'd need to do major research before doing this, of course. First off, I'd have to verify that everything that's running on the server now could be ported to windows. Is there a BIND for windows? An alternative to Webmin? (yes, webmin runs on windows but I just tried it and it's very beta quality) How will we handle the transfer smoothly? Since we're not going from simply one server to another, we'll have to have some sort of mediation server... Also I'd have to make sure it doesn't cost an arm and a leg for our provider to format and install a new OS for us.

Though just a theory I've had about losing CPU resources and some extra latency due to Wine to windows conversion... would we really gain all that much for converting?
Would the server be any more/less stable? Is this what you have to research?

What are your reasons for considering Windows?

Wouldn't we install Windows the same way we installed CentOS? Did this cost us?

There was a setup fee, yes. I'm thinking about switching because the server often crashes when you change map, map changes take much longer than they should, and I'm sure there's latency loss. Wine wasn't really meant to run a server, it just happens to be able to. :P
