Ulysses and Dev-Solution Merger
« on: October 02, 2008, 07:34:40 pm »
I was thinking about Dev-Solution and Ulysses, and how I contribute to both, we should totally converge in some way, but I have yet to think of a way for both to work together.

Though I understand the want to combine both worlds, I'm not sure how it would work out, or if it should even be done.
Dev-Solution is a good idea for all code languages.
However, it seems to be becoming a Gmod-centric site. I can tell you from experience, Lua, and specifically GLua(TM, my name for GMod Lua), isn't mainstream.
Though some game companies are using Lua for scripting (Cry-engine, some MMO I can't remember (big one though), and of course, Gmod), I get the idea that many "business class" developers frown upon it. (*SNOBS!!* :P )
I could be wrong, as my sample range isn't that large.

As a Ulysses member, I feel you're more than welcome to show your banner for your other hobbies.
I'm a frequent visitor to the Beast Build Server forums owned by WildWill, and a Superadmin to the server (and forum), but they all know my home is here.

The above rambling all being said; what type of merger do you see?
Ulysses is a team loved (and hated) by many; how do you see Dev-Solutions role in it?
Megiddo is much more a coder, as is spbogie, than I. My career gives me more administration roles of various apps and OSes than I would ever do coding for.
They may have more input than I.

My only question is, why? These forums and this site serve to support Ulysses, anything else and it would be lost in a crowd. :P

Well, I was thinking that we could both benefit in this in someway. One ulysses would increase traffic to Dev-Solution, while Dev-Solution could offer servers. While the Ulysses community is strictly GLua base, and Dev-Solution is open to any developers, we could further team Ulysses to other mediums. If not that, Dev-Solution has plenty of room for database, and the mythical unlimited storage. But, our servers run off pure Ulysses releases, and Mine, so we could show the power of combining both in that way. Also including Ulysses with Dev-Solution, we could direct alot of traffic to your server in about a week, since I see this is an issue. Any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer, but I got to be at work in a few.

Sorry, but I just can't see this as a good idea. Excepting the server, we get the traffic we need/want. Moving elsewhere just makes things more confusing for those looking for us and those who find us from dev-solution w/o prior knowledge of what we are.

What are your thoughts here JamminR and spbogie (if spbogie is still breathing that is)?

I have to agree.
The forums of Ulysses.net seems to be confusing enough at times. Too many off-topic questions get posted in ULysses General Chat and How-To.
I have nothing against either site having links to each other, but a major merger doesn't seem to fit.
