A chat with Overv (NewAdmin author)

Overv (author of NewAdmin) contacted me on Steam today and started amicably chatting about ways I could improve ULX. I didn't realize who he was at first, so I responded to him how I do to most people... saying that I'd put their suggestions on my todo list (I really do have a todo list, it just doesn't go into the void, honest!).

Anyways, once I realized who he was we started talking about ULX and NewAdmin, seems like he'd be pretty open to sharing code, standards, or otherwise. Might be worth looking into, in my opinion.

Also for some reason he apologized for this... do you think this is even real? He claimed he did it in Egypt.

I'm the constant suspicious cynic.
He's got a decent product, if that's what we wish to call our works.
I personally wonder... Why now? At what purpose now approach us?
ULib, and ULX, are very extensible. We've always made great strides to indicate this.
Rather than come straight to us and suggest improvements, write addons (GUI or otherwise) like other coders who like ULX do, or modify the heck out of it for personal use then share bits of it with us (Thanks Mr. President) he seems to decide to code his own admin mod using GUI, but, lacking ideas of his own, simply copies our commands.
He even goes so far as to indicate he's doing it to compete with ULX.

Currently the mod is in alpha stage, which means in this case that everything that it has got pretty much completely works, however it simply lacks a lot of features of the final release. You can get the latest revision from the SVN depot.

I'm sorry, but let's take those points and analyze the truth of each one.
-Full use of what Derma offers,
Admittedly, we're way behind on GUI. However, we rarely have to fix a derma broken menu because Garry changed/fixed something in Derma. Our menu was done before Derma became stable.

-revolutionary ways to improve admin menu friendliness and client friendliness,
We were far ahead on idea, but far behind on implimentation, if he's considering GUI = revolutionary.
I just searched, and I found GUI ideas/code samples as far back as 2005 in our forums.
Surely he could have come here and worked with what already existed, or made a new addon.

I don't even wish to comment. But Im going to. He's an idiot. At the time motd was written into ULX, people WANTED motd.
AND.... ANNNND..... It can be disabled.

and above all very easy to install and use
Uh. Ok. Whatever. Unzip. Edit settings/users.txt. Boy. Wow. We're difficult.

He also said something in his FP post about spamming ULX on servers.
Geez. Even that can be disabled.


So, Megiddo, can you tell me and sate my curiosity... why now?
Why couldn't he have just worked with it before now?

I'm still thinking about ideas for the UI, but don't have time atm to write lengthy code
