Ulysses Sandbox
« on: September 10, 2009, 08:57:19 am »
I've been looking around a lot of gamemodes, and I've almost come to the conclusion of begging a new project. I know for a fact, we all hate garrys code, which led me to the idea, why not create our own sandbox, gamemode hooks ect. Unlike many other who have tried, we do not need to be derived from sandbox, maybe not even the base. I haven't looked into the base too much, but I believe if we started with a clean slate. We could create a much better gmod experience. Also, the less code of his we use, the less chances of him breaking something in one of his updates.

"And thus the downfall of the great ULX dynasty was wrought not by another dynasty, but the slow and steady deterioration of the leaders themselves, followed by the deprecation of the great knowledge they possessed." -Gmod, Chapter 28, verse 34 -- Stickly

What I say here doesn't leave the team. :)

I can't speak for the other devs here, but my current plan is to stop all further major development within garrysmod after this ULib/ULX update. I'll still support code, fix bugs, security problems, or an occasional and easy-to-fix garry breakage, but I won't be making new features unless it's really compelling to do so. I'm tired of Garry, tired of his updates, and tired of his community. It's time to move on.

To curb any questions: I won't abandon these forums. Things'll continue on like normal for the most part.

I may or may not announce this fact in the next release, not sure yet.

So, the short answer, Jay, is that I think your idea sounds good, but I'm not going to be working on it. :P

Jay..
Even his non-sandbox gamemode hooks rely on lots of various funtions that as of the past year, Garry has been 'improving' and trying to make better and more open to the game community. Though, improving for Garry means breaking for most.
There aren't really large community based Gmod game modes out there.
Stranded comes to mind, but only because I know MrPresident rewrote/tweaked/incorporated many extra functions into his own copy for Gman4president.org before he joined the military.

Zombie Survival - but, , just too many kill all zombies that move games out there... even Valve has too many.
(I still want They Hunger to come out with next one)

RP... well.. why.
RPGs are a dime a dozen, you want to make a game originally designed to test creativity building things and turn it into like your playing real life.
Wait...oh yeah, I guess if you're 12 and never got to be real life.

I recommend you look towards Megiddo's other project.
If I had time to learn to code a real language such as C(or ++ or # or whatever its going to end up using)... I know I would.

If you decide to pursue your idea... I'll watch and perhaps participate with ideas... maybe even occasional code.
However, I don't believe, like Megiddo, that I'll be a large participant.

Megiddo... I'm not worried yet... you've been hinting about your plans since I 'met' you 3 years ago.
Knew it would come... next release will be a big one...it will take a while to retire.

I do look forward to the next big project though. :)

Lol its probably my fault-- Megiddo probably was done until I said I was gonna make a GUI-- Then I had asked him to change just a few minor things in ULX to help me out a bit-- then it kind of exploded from there. Oh well, once everything gets put together, its gonna be AWESOME!! Then yes, we should focus on Daydream :P
