Cyberwar effort: success!
« on: April 20, 2012, 01:00:28 pm »
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCLL9f4onvY

We won the exercise, at least among the graduate level schools. We might have lost to USAFA (undergrad)... but we're not sure.

In any case, it was a whole lot of work for relatively small amounts of excitement. They could get malware on our workstations just fine (gray cell does anything they're asked to), but all Internet-bound traffic was required to go through our authenticated proxy, so they could never get malware to call back to HQ.

Forgot to mention that my responsibility was implementing IPSec on the network. It was interesting how many things I got blamed for... from making the computer's too slow to BSOD'ing them to "breaking everything". Only about 25% of the time it was actually an IPSec-related issue.

We were effectively using IPSec as a host-based firewall, though an actual firewall software would have worked a lot better (IPSec is not meant to be used this way).

Sweet! I'm actually looking to join the Cyber Warfare command for the Army. It's probably one of the fastest growing commands especially with the wars ending.

Odd how each service is standing up their own cyber command when we already have an entire branch dedicated to cyber command, though. :P
