Hellfox's "NULX"
« on: April 30, 2013, 06:03:45 am »
When I first read his post, I was surprised on how split I was on this issue. In general I'm torn between wanting to continue ULX development myself and giving it to someone else to carry on.  Though I must say, I'm pretty sure Hellfox would not be able to accomplish half the things he lists there, as some of his other posts make it pretty clear he doesn't have a good grasp on gmod development yet. I'd feel much better about giving him a go-ahead on this project if I felt like he could do it and treat the ULX name well.

What are your guys' thoughts? I'm leaning away from letting him take on our name. But, it's clear he wants to do something. How could we redirect this energy into something useful? :)

I think ULX is fine how it is. Call me "Old-Fashioned" but I think if all these things were added to standard ULX, there would be more trouble than it's worth.

ULX was made very modular for a reason. Most of his ideas are better suited as mods for ULX.

I personally think ULX could definitely use support for SQL, but until Garry adds standard MySQL support without having to use a 3rd party addon, I don't think it should be added.

I think maybe suggesting that he should simply take up most of his ideas as modules or addons would be a good way to allow him to work off some of his creativity and maybe we'll see if he is as good with the code as he aspires to be.

Without even looking at the post we're discussing (I tend to key in on our team chat first, then the other unread posts), my first impression.
Hellfox seems to come and go depending on season and mood.
Aren't there projects here he's started, but, not fully supported much lately?

Ok. I'm going to go mow my tall yard.
I'll look at more posts later

EDIT And oh yeah, his 'ULX Team Wanna-be' moniker has always just...bugged me.
Now that I see that, I remember how many times I've looked at his stuff in the early days and thought... "What??! Even I'M not that sloppy"
I've not looked at any of his recent stuff though. It's quite possible he could outcode me now.  Especially since I'm out of practice

ULX doesn't need re-worked.
At it's core, it's strong.
SQL would be a great addition, but as MrPresident states, it should be part of Gmod before ever really considering including it by default.
All the other little list items he's got, for the most part, are fluff.

XGUI, though I'd love a 'dark' theme....sheesh... looks old?
Let's go back to the menu we had before XGUI.
I'm definitely old fashioned. I don't like too much GUI.
I have, and especially now in the past 10 years, always will, understand a 'text' menu quicker than I can focus/figure out WHAT an icon is, let alone what it does after I focus on it.
Barring user management, give me my ingame console with autocomplete, and I'll out command your gui just about any day.

TL:DR
I'm open to encouraging Hellfox to write modules to do many of the features he suggests.
I'm not open to most being included in ULX by default.
(Exception perhaps being what has already been done in releases already. Give, rocket, decal cleanup, some new stuff like that)
Perhaps we could recommend he convert many of the cool gm12 addons in our releases section to Gm13. (Yes, rocket being one of them, explode another)
He wants to modify chat too much. Tags are annoying. Time stamps might be cool. Chat suggestions (autocomplete?)... seem a nightmare compatibility issue waiting to heppen. As does the swear watch chat bot. SHEESH even I would want to try different ways to phonetically l33t sp3@k my way around it.
