ULX v4 kickoff meeting

Gentlemen!

Now that I am married and (mostly) settled into our apartment, I am eager to commence work on ULX version 4. The project is potentially ambitious, but I'd like to get feedback on features, ideas, and get an idea of what we want to focus on. Zyklus has lost interest in the project (he's.. interesting lol), and Megiddo won't be fully married and settled in until 6 or more weeks, but I think we can make some good progress in the meantime.

I'd like to schedule another online meeting sometime next week (6th - 12th). - when are you all available? Megiddo is currently limited to most weekday evenings, whereas I'm a little more flexible.

For now, I have created a somewhat professional-looking Google Doc with some of the basics I'd like to see- but it needs to be expanded and refined until we have a more concrete idea of what we want, so that we can start working on it piece by piece as what little free time we have allows.

Give me your preferred addresses so I can give you edit permissions and eventually make the document private, or we can switch to a different medium if you prefer.

I'd like everyone to read through the document by next meeting so we can have a good discussion about the ideas. You are most welcome to add any other ideas you may have or things that are missing. Be sure also to check Megiddo's OTLib that's linked in the document.

I'm excited to work on this, and I really hope we get the chance to see it to completion! ;D

Evenings work best for me.

If you do it not on a Friday I'll need to be off by midnight PST due to work.

I work Sun-Wed Noon to 11pm EST.
Other time is sacred with wife, now that I never see her since she works normal 8-6 M-F
I'd have to schedule with her in advance any night not spent with her (Such as Fri/Sat) that I'm not at work.
Wed Midnight EST, or any time after 1030PM Thursdays are probably best 'won't conflict with wife' times.
Friday after 11pm EST I might be able to twist her arm too. (She's usually still tired on a friday)

Oh, and I hate my job.
Having so much trouble not walking out of late.
13 years with this company, I've never hated it.
Disliked some managers or team members maybe, but never hated job itself.
That started in April. Tech jobs dried up suddenly over past few weeks. I've had two interviews.
One turned me down, one still in air, but I didn't feel that they liked what I had to offer, and didn't really feel comfortable with them tbh.
Ok, rant over. Sorry. Had to vent. I just got home a while ago. 3 nights into 4 night hate shift.

Sorry to hear about your job, JamminR :( I'm currently working at a small company (7-8 employees) contracting software development projects, and while the pay/benefits aren't the best, my boss treats us like family, and runs the business conservatively enough to keep us for quite a while with no jobs. So, I feel lucky that I don't have to worry too much about me suddenly not having a job next week.

How does next Thursday (July 10) at 7:30 (PDT), 8:30PM (MDT), 10:30PM (EDT) sound for everyone? (Assuming everyone is on Daylight Savings time here and that I know how timezones work properly.)

Also, I do want to get your preferred Gmail addresses editing permissions on the Google Doc.

Yup- Steam Chat worked fine for last time, so let's plan on that!
And yes, you should be able to use your @ulyssesmod.net email, since it's run as a Google App. You just need to be logged into it in order to edit.

Guess Megiddo has to enable us to use the ulyssesmod.net Google apps?
I clicked the invite Sticky sent and got this error

Yep, I think I'd have to pay for google docs -- that didn't used to be the case. Thursday at 8:30 MDT works for me. Looking forward to talking with y'all again.

Looks like we should be good for Thursday- if anyone has any objections to the time, let us know ASAP!

Please make sure to at least read through the document AND Megiddo's OTLib documentation, as linked in the doc. Do add any ideas you would like to see implemented in ULX as a whole. Here's a tentative agenda I have in mind for the meeting:

1) Confirm our position that we're all up for doing this rewrite. It will be a great deal of work, but we can reuse quite a bit of code, and if we segment the tasks enough, it should be manageable.

2) Discuss time commitments- What realistic amount of time do we each think we have to work on this? When is the earliest we'll be able to start?

3) Overview of OTLib by Megiddo, answer any questions we have (Gets us on the same page as Megiddo)

4) Feedback on Multi-server support, or syncing configurations across servers.

5) Outline and provide feedback on the new module and library system:
 - Is the idea too over-complicated? Can it be simplified?
 - Should we host modules on some kind of repository, or use github and the "raw" file URLs? Support for auto updating? Denote differences in Release/Dev?
 - What would the process be like for a user to install ULX on a brand new server, or on a collection of servers?
 - Should there be support for on-the-fly (or after map change) enabling/disabling of plugins and features, along with being able to remove the module altogether?
 - Discuss an overview of the technical implementation of the system, if time allows.

6) Quick user interface style feedback for the new ULX menu. I'll be working on a new design to replace XGUI, and would like some help getting a general idea of the look and feel:
 - Should we stick to pure Derma/GWEN as much as possible, and create a skin to make it unique?
 - Should we restrict ourselves not use any external textures/pngs that the client would have to download? Many skins nowadays do this.
 - Flat style? Moderator Example Example 2 Example 3 Example 4 Example 5
 - Should we keep the interface compact like we do now, or use more whitespace but with more screens? See this comment, in regards to example 3 above.
 - (images found from this Facepunch thread, other designs there)

7) Discuss other new requested features, as outlined in the docs.

8 ) Quick discussion about Data and ULX. Ignoring XGUI, what data does ULX send to each client, and what method does it use to transport it? Can this data be minimized in any way? This is currently one of the bigger issues with ULX right now (XGUI's fault), so I would like to optimize this whenever possible.

9) Finally, the kickoff!
 - What are the most important parts of ULX to get the simplest working version we can?
 - Do we know everything we need to to get started?
 - What should we have completed for our next meeting? (Meeting in 2-3 weeks, maybe? Or when Megiddo is all settled in to his new life?)
 - How should tasks be divvied up, who wants to work on what?

Please mention any other things you'd like to discuss, as well. I'm looking forward to this! :D

Thought it might already be assumed, I'd like to confirm...I make no time, and actually, energy and motivation, to contribute to coding this new update.
I will maintain my knowledge of changes, and assist in support through forums and code/idea suggestions to team and forum users where I can, to support our projects.
I'm in survival mode right now in my life, and all hobbies have taken back seat unfortunately to survival mode.

That's quite alright JamminR- we're welcome for any ideas you can bring to the table, and we definitely are grateful for your help with the forums! :) You'll have the easiest job during the meeting- relaxing, pitching ideas, getting informed, and hopefully keeping us on track. ;)
