Re-arranging my mess
« on: December 06, 2014, 03:19:41 pm »
I'm moving stuff in my office. Hopefully, during that time, I'll also be cleaning out some of the huge bits of clutter that I've accumulated.
I know that half-way through this project, I'm going to regret it.
A few days after, I'm going to wish I'd done it sooner.

Either way, at best, I'll be back online evening of 12/7.
At worst ... ???

Now, can anyone tell me where I placed my TOS SPDIF fiber cable from 4-5 years ago...during my re-arrangement, I'm hooking up a real amp/receiver to my PC that I've also had sitting in a box cluttering.
I'm sure it's in one of these clutter boxes somewhere.....

This is one of the advantages of moving twice a year for college. Unfortunately, I'm now starting to collect clutter too.

Well, primary machine is back up, but...as wife put it so well when she checked in about an hour ago... "nothing's changed?"
Sure it has! You just don't SEE it.
Desks were moved. Speaker cabling laid. I now have a real sound system in my office. Cabling was re-done so as to hide better behind the parts of the desk that it could be.
When desks were moved, they were cleared off, filling half a trash bag of odd assorted notes/discs/stuff I don't need.
PCs/monitors/laptops I've had laying around for months in various stacks will now, over the next few evenings will go TOGETHER on the desks and be operational.
As for the boxes with cables/keyboards/picture frames/etc that were never unpacked after I painted my office a little over a year ago, they'll be connected to the PCs, placed on desks, hung on walls, or placed in the office closet with all the other cables.

Yes, much change in progress!

Now, does anyone want a HP LaserJet 4Plus that I've had but not used for ~8 years?
Needs a maintenance kit (was printing 2-3 pages then jamming).
I dare say after this much time it needs new toner too.
You pay shipping!

More sales item to come (likely on local Craigslist of course) :P

Hah, though I wouldn't want one now, those printers were awesome. My mom's still using her 4L, though Mac support is getting flakey for it.

Mac support is getting flakey for it.

There, fixed that for you.

Seriously though, I have NOTHING against Mac.
I've just never had the funds to spend, on average, 2x-3x the money for a system with 1/2 the vendor support that upgrades it's own same model name systems half way through a model line.
If someone wants to get me a reasonably new Mac for Christmas, I'll learn and support it.
Same way I learned 'ibm pc'... by breaking it, repairing it.
(and, building them from case up, not quite the same for Macs)

Lots of PhD types around my new job that use Macs though... maybe I'll be able to talk my boss into some more OTJT opportunities.
(Even they, officially, aren't supported)

I think breaking support for something ~20 years old is fairly reasonable... ;)

Of course, being unix-based, there are workarounds, but not very pretty ones.
