DarkRP proposal
« on: December 13, 2014, 04:01:19 pm »
I'm pretty sure I asked if we could totally 100% stop supporting DarkRP in any way before.
I don't remember the answer, and I'm not going to search for it.
I think it was "no".

My newest proposal.
1) We stop supporting it. Period.
Heck, I'd even suggest we add code to shut down all but the ban, kick, teleport commands in ULX. Prevent all usermanagement/punishment/motd/etc.
2) ANY question we see asked in ANY thread or post gets SPLIT or MOVED to a NEW Forum area called "DarkRP Dump".

I'm tired of DarkRP conflicts. I don't want our code to fit around DarkRP, I just want our code to stop running.

Sure, we'd lose some user base, but, I'd feel less like pulling my hair out when I see a thread like this one.

Hmm, a "self preservation mode", of sorts? It is an interesting idea. I suspect we'd get even MORE questions of "why does ULX break with DarkRP" if we did that, though.

I don't mind if we answer out of hand, "we don't support DarkRP, only Sandbox." Our energy, attention, and caring are finite resources which are better spent elsewhere.

You just stated what our answer would be, but, slightly different.
ULX doesn't support DarkRP.

While I am on board with this 110%, there's only one problem...

DarkRP is a huge share of the gmod server market.
If we stop supporting DarkRP right out, then these server 'administrators' are forced to look elsewhere for their admin tools.

I think if we want ULX to remain a major player in the AdminMod Wars we need to support the most popular gamemode in gmod.

--at least to a degree--

That's honestly fine with me. Let them seek the help of Fadmin devs.

I still feel the same way now after having just seen yet another post where someone created a group higher than superadmin as I did when I made this post a few weeks ago.
Yes, someone will be nice enough to try to help, I just cringe when I see it.

* JamminR rage quits

I understand it's not going to happen... guess I just needed a sounding board and hoped it might happen.

DarkRP and TTT both have a large "marketshare". :-\ We need to at least make sure that nothing crashes and burns with it. I imagine this will be much easier once we get around to ULX 4, I hope. :P

That being said, FTpje (DarkRP) has been willing to work with us in the past on major issues, so I don't imagine too much drama there.

Major issue = DarkRP seems to expects/instructs to use an "owner" group.
There, get him to release DarkRP update without that, andr use ULib for FAdmin (instead of over-writing same group commands we do and then conflicting)
= 80% of our DarkRP/ULX isn't working reports gone.

To be clear, I don't suggest that we intentionally drop support of DarkRP, I just don't think it's worth our time to delve into the components of DarkRP trying to debug conflicts. We try to play nicely with other mods, I think it's reasonable to expect the same from others...

I don't think anyone is saying you think we drop support.
I see your stance as being same as always.

I just wish FPtje would drop whatever idea/guidance/dependency DarkRP has for something (I've no idea if it's group/rank/job/team) called "Owner".
If he'd add Fadmin compatibility to use ULib when present instead of overwriting (and conflicting when it does) the group checks, I believe we'd have many less issues.
Those are two big points I see that drive people here.
