Recent Behavior on the forums

There have been some particularly toxic people on the forums.

Livco and Bytewave come to mind.

Unless anyone has a problem with it, I'm going to start temp banning these people so that maybe they'll learn to be a little more friendly and quit abusing the forums simply for post grinding.

I recently banned Livaco for 3 days for posting nonsense to as many topics as possible, something he started doing again the moment his ban expired and I just now banned Bytewave for 3 days for being very rude (/index.php/topic,8363.0.html#msg42658 I probably wouldn't have banned him simply for this, but upon looking at his recent posts, he is starting to make a habit of doing this.





Now, I know that JamminR and I are by far the most active admins on the forum with Stickly probably in a close 3rd, and we've always kind of sat back and let things go so long as they didn't swear or get too out of hand, but I don't want to just sit back and let a couple bad apples ruin the crop.

Stop me if I'm out of line here, but I think if we want to run a family friendly community I think that we need to focus a little more on the friendly aspect.

Whew.
I thought Livaco was just getting on my grumpiness. I've been biting my tongue, for fear of feeding him more to babble about.
He and XXLMM13XX could permanently go for the various crap they post and I wouldn't miss them.
I've come so close to rage posting/banning several times. XXLMM dude seemed to chill a bit since I told him he never listened/read/followed instruction.

As for bytewave, my 'you need to search' energy has indeed morphed into a monster.
Honestly, I think he has some mental (bi-polar?) issues.
When he first started the forum (as a brony sparkle username), he was almost the same, argumentative.
He seemed to chill a bit.
Now it seems he's back to original postings.

So, indeed, I agree.
I find myself purposely biting my tongue more lately, or I'd be banning more and we'd no longer have a community.
I can't imagine me being here with the current batch of kids if I were still at my old day job...I'd be taking out frustrations here)

FYI - Just banned Livaco for 7 days partial (no post) for this little gem - /index.php/topic,6291.15.html#msg42785 />He replied to a 16 month old post, and the user hadn't been here for 6 months.
I've nothing against necro-posting when people bring new/fresh information, but, I've not seen Livaco do it once yet.
Yes, there were one or two posts that were nice or helpful in other newer discussions, but, that doesn't make up for the 95% others.

I am fine with your moderator decisions- you guys are doing a great job. I am a terrible moderator because, even though I get easily annoyed, I still can't bring myself to banning people based on their incompetence. That's what Facepunch is for.   (But yes, after repeated warnings and whatnot, a ban is perfectly acceptable. It's just rather hard to keep track of.)

Speaking of, I read an interesting thread on Facepunch about the status of the Garry's Mod Community:

tl;dr points:
 - Mostly due to youtubers, the majority of the playerbase is a younger and less mature audience.
 - The more mature and creative developers and content-makers have been moving on.
 - ScriptFodder has been churning paid "shovelware", combined with server owners thinking that the more paid addons they have, the better their server will be.
 - garrysmod.org (garrysmods.org) is back, which will help promote better free addons.
 - Creative gamemodes are having troubles getting noticed- everything is mostly TTT and <whatever>RP.
 - Larger, but less mature playerbase. Creativity very down as limits are being reached, and new ideas are hard to come by.


So yeah.. Hey, Megiddo! How long would UU actually take to get in a releasable state? That might be a fun way to increase Team Ulysses' popularity and spice things up a bit!   (I sound like a PR guy now.. hmm).

Hi, Stickly! I'm still focusing on ULX4 at the moment. As far as I see it, there would be three phases of UU implementation:

1. General physics -- ridiculously easy.
2. Player physics -- forces, view angles, and prediction -- would have to sit down and think those through.
3. General features -- buttons to launch things into orbit, things to get you between planets, etc. This is where the bulk of the work would come from.

So, #1 would take five minutes. #2 would take a few days-weeks depending on the state of my brain. #3 would take months, but is really just icing on the cake anyways. But before all of that, I would need a test map -- can you talk to Flaming Martha for me?

Back on topic, since I'm not able to get involved at the level I'd like with the forums, I'm happy with whatever decisions y'all make.

I'll talk to Flaming Martha and see what he thinks. I believe that making a spherical model (instead of raw CSG or displacement maps) might be the best way to go about it, especially after seeing that video where someone got walking on sides of props working.

Regardless of our opinions on the monitization of GLua scripts, I don't think we should tolerate people linking to leaked scripts or posting servers that use them.

Just an FYI, I banned two users from the forums today (7 days each).

Ethorbit and Undercover Orange.
Both were caused by toxic attitudes toward the forums/community when not getting their way or when offered criticism. I hate to be a nazi, but like I said in the original post of this thread, we need to nip these players early before this type of attitude spreads.

I was considering some type of punishment for the negative attitude.
7 days seems a good start.

Team ulysses mailbox -  seems Ethorbit reported his post and is trying to use medication as scapegoat for overall bad attitude.
Even if it's true, this will hopefully help teach them to take better care of themselves.
