Search Disabled
« on: April 06, 2015, 06:30:05 pm »
Guests and regular users could use the search to search the hidden forums (this one). I couldn't see that we had anything configured incorrectly, so I disabled search for everyone but global mods. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next SMF version.

I usually use Google to search the forums, anyways, but I couldn't find any simple modifications to switch us over to Google-only searching.

*sigh*
It's a conspiracy to stop me from telling everyone to use the search box.

I've been troubleshooting this issue for some time now.
I just installed a clean installation of SMF on a local web server to try and recreate the issue.

On Ulysses.net: On an alternate account, I search the term 'Livaco' and the first result is JamminR's latest post in the Ulysses Team forum which is hidden. It shows the overview of the post, but of course I can't access the post or forum since I don't have access.

On my local server: I created a forum which only moderators had access to and posted the SAME post JamminR posted that I was able to search for here. I searched for it on my local copy with an admin account. Found it. Search for it on a member account. No Results.

This seems to be an issue with this particular installation of SMF, not a bug in the SMF search code.
I will continue to troubleshoot and post any updates I find.

I created a NEW forum and made a post in it.

Account with access could search it just fine.
Account without access, no results.

Seems it is something in the settings of the General Chat (Team Ulysses) forum itself.
Continuing to troubleshoot.

I fixed it.
I don't even know how... I just created the new test forum, found out it wasn't the forum software, made sure the permissions matched (they did...) and now it works all of a sudden.

I can no longer search into threads I don't have access to.
I've re-enabled search for everyone.

If you guys find any other bugs, let me know and I can look into it. Kind of strange.. maybe it had a permission stuck or something and just needed to be refreshed.

Scratch that...
It WAS working properly.. now it's not again.

I don't even know... I'm disabling search again.

I forgot how I got where I found this, but, here's the link I think will work.
/index.php?action=admin;area=manageboards;sa=board;boardid=16;rid=permissions
I noticed the permission profile for the board before entering that screen was "default".
Once I got to that screen, there is a "No Search" in the dropdown selection for permission profile.
I wonder if that might "fix" it for us.
I've got no time to research further (more coming later in a few min in another post)

I created the 'No Search' thinking I could change some things in the permissions, but there wasn't any search related permissions.
That setting doesn't do anything.

I wonder if it's one of our packages... though none of them should be affecting search permissions.

I'm planning on doing a full reinstall of the forums (keeping a minimal database set of posts and members), hopefully that will fix it.

I tried uninstalling all of the packages (except the updates) and that didn't seem to fix it either.

Maybe it's one of the patches? I'm not sure what else to try but a reinstall.

Is there a way to do a Major Upgrade to 2.0.9 instead of patching it up incrementally?
We just recently upgraded MyBB from 1.6.2 to 1.8.4 and it required a full upgrade and not an update since we had missed a major revision. Everything transferred normally and we didn't lose anything.

I'm just concerned with losing posts or accounts if we do a fresh install. How much access do you have to the MySQL database on the web server? We should definitely make a full backup before doing anything major JUST incase.

I have full access. I'll put the forums into maintenance mode and transfer everything over to a test site first just to make sure it's smooth.

On a somewhat forum-maintenance related note, iSnipeu created a test post/thread in Off-Topic, but couldn't delete it. Apparently users can see a remove button for their topics, but they don't have permission. i've removed the topic for his benefit, but wanted to leave a note about it here.

Here's the post:

EDIT: uh the "remove" button doesn't work but still shows anyway...

(The image shows the forum's "An Error Has Occurred!" stating "You cannot delete your own topics in this board. Check to make sure topic wasn't just moved to another board.")

I think I did that intentionally because I was tired of threads disappearing.
