License for ULX4?
« on: February 21, 2016, 02:14:53 pm »
I've been giving the license to use in ULX4 some thought, and wanted your opinions on it.

I'm leaning towards the LGPL -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Lesser_General_Public_License -- this requires users to keep any derivative (modified ULX4) under the same license, but anything that is merely using the ULX4 API is unrestricted.

Creative Commons has served us well for our other projects, but was not really intended for source code, and is ambiguous regarding code that is only calling the API.

With the way things are going with the pay-for-code community, I think this is a good idea.

We could have a whole discussion on why selling code is a good or bad idea, but it's a thing and allowing (legally) for people to create really awesome extensions for ULX (even if they want to sell them) will only benefit ULX in the long run.

What MrP said.
(he pretty much said what I was thinking after reading Megiddo's but before his post)

I also concur- I think that sounds great for our needs. :) I can't remember any other alternative licenses we looked at- I am aware that ULX4 currently uses MIT, and I was thinking it seemed a bit loose.
