Release!
« on: May 16, 2010, 07:24:35 pm »
Ok, Existo fans are really frustrating me.
I don't have the leet skillz Megiddo does for coding.
Something that takes me a few hours to figure out takes you, oh, 5 minutes.
Experience has much to do with that, but it's also talent.
I have my talents in other places and am happy with that.

Besides calling all activities/jobs/friends that would distract and telling them to leave you alone Megiddo, what can I do to help get a new release out soon.
I know it would be a challenge, but I'd love to beat Existo out the door with the new XGUI integration.

ULX svn is every bit as good as the latest challenger, and we know it.

My todo list is empty as far as release-blocking items. Mainly I just have some code cleanup things left. The problem is that XGUI is still a long ways from completion. I've been toying with the idea of going ahead and releasing the next versions of ULib and ULX, but that still leaves us without the awesome new GUI.

How quickly do you think you can get XGUI ready for release without sacrificing quality, Stickly? Is there anything we can help you with? We don't have your rad layout skills, but maybe there's backend we could complete for you?

I completely agree with you JamminR, we've got all the big features that Exsto is pushing. Well, everything but the three-way saving, but that doesn't matter to end users anyways. By the way, I've got to say XGUI is turning out even better than expected. It's like Google Wave meets server administration (everything is updated and synced across any open XGUI windows across clients in realtime), and that's something that Exsto definitely doesn't have!

One thing I'd like to do before release is setup a test session where we just run through ULX and XGUI feature by feature and make sure it's still all up to speed.

Yeah, I am a bit far behind  :o

And with my new job starting Tuesday, My free time is getting sparse. I do like this newfound motivation though! :D

What do I need help with, what do I need help with.. Ooh! Megiddo, perhaps you could continue going over the parameters in the players menu, getting those all .. player/group/global restrictions checked! You've seen where the code is in players.lua, it's all basically in the same spot, lemme know if you need help finding anything.
EDIT: Actually, perhaps you could also help with the saving of adverts and gimps and other things you kept bugging me about, too :P

Secondly, JamminR, keep it up with the ideas and suggestions! Let us know when we add something new if it's good or bad, or possibly layout changes. Here's a couple of starting points:
1- Look at the right side of the maps tab, is there anything you can think of that we can put there? Should I move some of the elements around to better manage the space?
2- Where can I add something that states "XGUI for ULX"? I was thinking of making a 50% transparent colored "toolbar" type thing at the very bottom (that's centered and takes up about 90% of XGUI's width, and is about 20-25 pixels high)-- That would say XGUI, promote ULX, maybe show the server name, and the time? (Maybe show author of the current module?)
3- Players tab- I don't like the separate columns for commands and command arguments. I've been thinking of doing something like seen here in Overv's Evolve.
4- Same players tab, Since the arguments are generated from ULX's commands, I feel the layout of the arguments and the button to run command thing looks a bit crude. Any ideas there?
(Okay, I could probably go on for a while, but, since my mind is drawing a blank, I'm going to stop thinking about it)

As for the final polished XGUI-- It depends. I would like to have XGUI 100% complete for release mainly because of the sparseness of ULX's actual release schedule (like.. once a year?) I figure we can probably release another 'Release' version later, but.. That's more work for you guys. Other than that, Without sitting here and thinking about how much work there is to do, I can't really say how long it might take me to finish, so, I best be back to work :P. Let me know what you guys think!

Oh thank you, I don't know why that didn't come up when I searched the forum for it, but oh well.

What about adding this as a way of helping to protect our users from server crashes?

In what context would we use that?

Hmm. Lots of ideas there. Could run a stream of diff colors/italics besides server data/name info.
General idea.
XGUI for ULXGUI for ULXGUI for ULXGUI for ULX

Or at bottom left and top right corners of some window.
U            ULX
L                G
XGUI          U
                  I

Ok, I'm not taking the time to line that up using tables, but, I hope you get my point.

I'll have to look over the gui tabs here later.

lol, JamminR... It took every ounce of me to remain neutral in that post. lol. Also on a related note... I logged into my sandbox server and found that my guys are using something other than ULX... time to clean house I guess... :)

Haha. MrPresident, you'll still be a member of this community if you make a change. :D
I may not be able to say "respected", but, still a member. :P

In all seriousness; Like Megiddo I am always eager to hear, from someone who actually knows truth (too many posts in that Existo thread about ULX are false or out of date) why they use another admin mod.
So rarely do we get truly objective input.

Before you clean house, find out why your admins are using whatever it is.

MEGIDDO! You're not online and I'm currently very lazy:

Some of your replicated cvars aren't working properly on client's first join.. I get only these source errors in the console:

Code: Text
  1. Connected to 192.168.0.3:27015
  2.
  3. sandbox
  4. Map: gm_construct
  5. Players: 1 / 16
  6. Build: 3943
  7. Server Number: 5
  8.
  9. ConVarRef ulx_voteEcho doesn't point to an existing ConVar
  10. SetConVar: No such cvar ( ulx_voteEcho set to 1), skipping
  11. ConVarRef ulx_welcomemessage doesn't point to an existing ConVar
  12. SetConVar: No such cvar ( ulx_welcomemessage set to Welcome to %host%! We're playing %curmap%.), skipping
  13. ConVarRef ulx_chattime doesn't point to an existing ConVar
  14. SetConVar: No such cvar ( ulx_chattime set to 1.4), skipping
  15. ConVarRef ulx_votemapSuccessratio doesn't point to an existing ConVar
  16. SetConVar: No such cvar ( ulx_votemapSuccessratio set to 0.4), skipping
  17.

Dunno if those are related, anyways, but when I try running a command like this:
GetConVar( "ulx_cl_logDir" )
--It returns nil. I have XGUI spit a message every time this occurs:
Code: [Select]
XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for rep_sv_voiceenable. Please rejoin the server to fix.
XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for rep_sv_alltalk. Please rejoin the server to fix.
XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for rep_ai_disabled. Please rejoin the server to fix.

XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for ulx_cl_logSpawns. Please rejoin the server to fix.
XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for ulx_cl_logDir. Please rejoin the server to fix.
XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for rep_sbox_noclip. Please rejoin the server to fix.
XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for rep_sbox_godmode. Please rejoin the server to fix.

XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for rep_sbox_weapons. Please rejoin the server to fix.
XGUI: Could not get replicated convar for rep_physgun_limited. Please rejoin the server to fix.

Anyways.. Yeah, a rejoin or a server restart fixes it.. Any idea of what it could be? (In fact, at the end there, it's showing the cvars I added via ULib.replicatedWritableCvar)
