I just wanted to throw out mention that the reason I've been so scarce this week (and will continue to be until next week) is that I've got family in town... I've been checking the forums mainly from my iPhone, which is why my answers have been short lately. :P

Sorry for the delayed response, was in transit back to Iraqistan...

I don't know what it was they were using.. but I hated it. I currently don't have much input or whatever in my community as they are paying for the server and I can't play on this connection so they kind of do whatever they want. From what I saw from that admin mod, It was horrible. It relied on a key bound menu like assmod did.. and I hate that. Sure there were con and chat commands.. but I don't want to hold down a key to use a gui should I choose to use one. Trust me.. we'll go back to ULib (at the very least) when I get back. I was considering not using ULX and just using ULib and writing my own admin module for it but that is just a spark. Obviously it would just be a custom thing.. probably something to tie servers and stuff.. and you don't need to worry, I'm not going to package and release it.. that's all we need is more admin mods floating around.

I can't help but wonder if the author of Exsto would write his code comments the same if he knew I was reviewing his code. Interesting to see how other programmers would solve the same problems, though!

What intrigues me most about Exsto is the FEL system. In my opinion, his implementation is horrid and no one in their right mind would want to use it anyways (it's only a tiny baby step above writing the SQL to do it yourself)... but it does give me ideas on how to make such a system successful :P. It would be handy to have for supporting both smaller servers and larger servers. For the small servers, you want to write the data out to a file so the admins can edit it by hand if they want (this should be the default). For the large server, you want to write the data out to SQL so it can be shared across servers and clans or hosts can write web backends to the configuration.

Oddly enough, I haven't even touched the Evolve source code. I guess something about the Exsto author's utter dishonesty (and admittance to it) made me feel the need to tear his code apart.

On a completely unrelated note, garry broke our system of reading svn revision numbers a while back, so all server just say <svn revision unknown> now or something like that. Should we just report it as <svn> instead? It's annoying since svn could mean just about anything. The author of Exsto gets around this by manually recording each revision number, but that seems like it would get tiresome pretty quickly.

I feel that knowing the revision anyone is reporting issues about would help us greatly. Many times I've found, both in the forums and while playing Gmod, people complaining of issues that we fixed in newer revisions.
I've noticed several times the unknown, but didn't know it was due to a Garry change.

As for the SQL system, it's been a popular enough request and discussion here that a way to impliment it easier for admins running larger servers would be nice.
However, as you stated, don't forget folks like me who only dabble occasionally and would like a easier flat file system.

I'd much rather go with SQL, to me, it's easier to read and better organized. Things in tables just look good. Also, wouldn't require the need to extra functions to parse arrays into text.

*Revivesish thread*

Pitching a couple suggestions here-- How hard or easy would it be to have instant (or mapchange) in-game support of enabling/disabling plugins in ULX or ULib? Having them instant may take a lot more work, and in some cases may be a bad idea.. But I think being able to enable/disable a plugin without actually having to hop onto your server's FTP and add/delete files would be a really good feature.

In any case, I think we should make a central database of plugin information, like Evolves: http://evolve.overvprojects.nl/index.php?page=plugins
Even if we don't incorporate it into our website, we can give XGUI access to it, and we can then advertise our plugins to those who don't traverse our forums.

That's not a good thing to post in a thread urging a release. :P

I agree that it would be a good thing (tm), but it's not going to happen this release.

Stick, you and Megiddo work on Xgui. I believe the first page discusses Megiddo's todo list being clear but waiting on XGUI.
Then you had to go and get a job. Sheesh. How rude.
Like lua coding for ULX isn't satisfying enough to not need money for food/bills/women/chinese carry out/pink blankets/cookies.

Hahaha, I know, I know, I was just at work when the idea popped into my head. I was just trying to think of ways to make people want ULX :P

Megiddo-- Idea for handling votemaps (everyone else can be confused by this post :P)

The only thing I was concerned with was the defaults votemaps.txt file has excludes for the background maps, etc-- Maps that ded servers won't have. But, I was planning on handling XGUI with existing maps only.. But either way, I came up with this idea:

XGUI will get the list of votemaps and, if admin, the full list of available maps. From there, XGUI will have in it's server settings module a place where it shows two lists of Votemaps and non-votemap maps, and you can easily select maps and move them to other other list. Then, I will add an option in XGUI to either Exclude or Include new maps by default:
a) If new maps are EXCLUDED, XGUI will save the list of maps that are in the votemap list, then set the votemapmode to include.
b) If new maps are INCLUDED, XGUI will save the list of maps that are excluded, then set the votemapmod to include.

The only issue is that the default exclude list will probably be lost, which.. I don't know if that would make any current server owners angry (most likely not, but you never know).

Anyways, there's my idea. In fact, now that I look at it, I probably didn't need to ramble on and worry about anything.. Oh well, now I have something to reference when I get home from work :P
