*sigh* if ever there was a time to walk away from my PC for a break, it was just now.
After 4 nights of playing minecraft every night for 2-3 hours to 'relax' after work
Tonight I'd found my first pumpkin.
I'd been mining this evening, and...tatada... found a diamond! My first!
I'd also found a good vein of redstone dust, coal, and one or two ores.
I'd decided to mine a few obsidian pieces for a project i have in mind.
Poured some water over lava. Got a few peices.
Went on mining another area and, poof. lava fell on me.
I died. I lost all the above, and 4 bars of gold, 7 iron.
My flint and steel.
I'm really disheartened. Seriously. Sure. I know its a game, but i have a heavy heart.
All that work. Those gifts (DIAMOND pick axe, mind you, its like a rolex in the world of minecraft), gone in a literal flash.
At least I have a stone pickaxe back at my crate and will start again.

Ah, drat. Happens to all of us at some point though...

By the way, diamond is always within seven squares of lava (or so I'm told). So looking around lava is always good.

Hopefully this will lighten your heart a little bit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIhs8_m5qPc

After some time, I've desided to take a Minecraft sabatical. Perhaps permanent retirement.
The primary reason I don't like RPGs is that I find real life challenging enough spending time earning rewards. (money to pay bills, interactions with humans to remain social, whatever 'reward' you may see in life)

A game that takes hours similar to real life, to also die just as quickly and lose everything as real life, just ends up not being all that enjoyable for me.
Crates don't count as saving and don't make up for loss of whatever I've discovered then died recovering.

It's fun, but my 7 day obsession was just that, an obsession I don't need.
Minecraft, Thanks for all the fish.
Perhaps one day I'll take another dip in the pool.

Probably a decision for the best. One I should most likely make as well.... :P

If a server is ever set up to where death and loss of resources due to it is not possible, I'd be likely to fall off the wagon.

5 years later....
Though I fell off the wagon several times, the last time I played Minecraft for more than 2-3 hours in one sitting was about a year before Microsoft bought them out.
While surfing geek news sites, I find this.
http://techgage.com/news/verizon-creates-minecraft-mod-to-let-players-video-chat-on-an-in-game-smartphone/

When Microsoft bought MC,  though happy for MoJang and new-found (MORE) wealth, I thought... sell-out... corporate greed is not far off now in Minecraft.
Now, it's just been proven to me more true.

I'm not sure I'll ever want to go back.
